Agriculture
Canby earned its nickname as the "Garden Spot of Oregon"
due to the extensive growing and processing of agricultural crops.
Agricultural products include a variety of
vegetables, strawberries, cane berries, grass seeds, hazelnuts,
peaches, grapes, evergreen tree seedlings, Christmas trees and
flower seeds, bulbs and tubers.
In Clackamas County, 75 percent of the nursery
acreage is in the vicinity of Canby.
Manufacturing
A new addition to the city's Industrial Park is Spectrum
Woodworking, Inc. The company and its 30 employees set up
headquarters in a new 30,000 square foot building, manufacturing
custom commercial cabinetry and millwork.
Since 1932 when founder Sam Smith created his
first kiln dried Douglas Fir springboard in rural Canby, S.R.
Smith has been creating quality diving boards, rails, slides and
pool deck products. They've grown a lot in the past 70 years, now
employing 74 people, but have never forgotten the basic rural
roots and responsibilities that have helped S.R. Smith become a
world leader in pool deck equipment.
Operations began at the end of 1997 at Shimadzu USA
Manufacturing Inc. in its 54,000 square foot plant. The Japanese
scientific instrument company employs approximately 85 people.
Manufacturing more than 8,000 batteries a day, with 300
employees, Johnson Controls, Inc. is the largest single
employer in Canby. The
200,000 square foot facility sits on a 20 acre fight industrial
site in northwest Canby.
Canby Sand and Gravel, located at the northwest end of town,
operates an asphalt plant as well as a gravel plant. Canby Sand
and Gravel has been servicing the surrounding areas for more than
29 years. The addition of Canby Landscaping has added to the
services offered.
Other manufacturers produce custom injection molded plastic
parts; instruments for the trucking industry; fasteners for
packages; custom-made seats for heavy equipment; sand and gravel;
reflective beads for highway markings; paving materials; burlap
bags; and craft books and scrapbook supplies
Business & Retail District
Canby's business district includes the original downtown core
and areas along Highway 99E. A broad spectrum of products and
services are available for both residents and visitors to Canby,
meeting most of their shopping and business needs.
Canby is home to 3 major supermarkets, 6 banks,
a bi-weekly newspaper, 4 pharmacies, a major car dealership, 2
local gyms and merchants offering building materials, clothing,
gourmet coffee, landscape supplies, electronic equipment.
appliances, quilting supplies, home furnishings and decor and
health foods.
In 2000 a 165,000 square foot Fred Meyer store was developed in
the southeast area of town. In 2002 Pan Pacific Properties began a
major redevelopment of a large retail complex in the southwest
area along Hwy 99E.
Service Sector
Specialized and professional services in Canby covers a broad
spectrum to meet the needs of a growing community.
Personalized services include hair salons, barber shops,
dentists, physicians, attorneys, CPAs, chiropractors, travel
agencies, insurance agents, and real estate companies. Local
veterinary clinics serve a clientele that includes family pets as
well as farm and ranch animals from the rural areas encircling
Canby.
Site Availability
To meet the growth that is eminent for Canby, the city's
Comprehensive Plan looks down the road 20 years and has earmarked
large portions of land for industrial use.
Within the city limits, 154 acres has been designated for light
industrial use and 25 acres for heavy industrial use. Within the
urban growth boundary, another 240 acres is designated for light
industry and 70 acres for heavy industry. Total figures are 394
acres for light industrial use and 94 for heavy industrial.
Communications
Canby Telephone Association is an independent Cooperative
telephone company serving the Canby area since 1904. CTA provides home and business
telephones, broadband technology, Internet access, calling
features, long distance and voice mail.
Utilities
Canby operates it own electric and water service, something
uncommon in the rest of Oregon. A five-member Canby Utility board,
appointed by the mayor, oversees electrical and water service
within the city limits.

and responsible hometown service to our customers by furnishing
adequate amounts of safe, reliable electricity and pure water at
reasonable, stable prices with a balanced, flexible approach to
environmental concerns and future needs.
NW Natural provides natural gas services to residential and
commercial properties in the Canby area.
