| Canby earned its nickname as the "Garden Spot of
Oregon" due to the extensive growing and processing of agricultural
crops. Agricultural products include a variety of
vegetables, strawberries, cane berries, grass seeds, hazelnuts, peaches,
grapes, evergreen tree seedlings, Christmas trees and flower seeds,
bulbs and tubers.
In Clackamas County, 75 percent of the nursery
acreage is in the vicinity of Canby. |

A new addition
to the City’s Baker Drive Industrial Park is MEC Northwest. The company
and its 70 employees relocated to Canby in early 2005. MEC Northwest is
a Contract Electronic Manufacturing company, supplying OEM’s with custom
circuit board assemblies and full box build and cabinet assemblies.
Additionally, they provide design engineering services and quick-turn
proto-type services.
Since 1932 when
founder Sam Smith created his first kiln dried Douglas Fir springboard
in rural Canby, S.R. Smith has been creating quality diving boards,
rails, slides and pool deck products. They’ve grown a lot in the past 70
years, now employing 100 people, but have never forgotten the basic
rural roots and responsibilities that have helped S.R. Smith become a
world leader in pool deck equipment.
Operations began
at the end of 1997 at Shimadzu USA Manufacturing Inc. in its 54,000
square-foot plant. The Japanese scientific instrument company employs
approximately 85 people.
Manufacturing
more than 8,000 batteries a day, with 300 employees, Johnson Controls,
Inc. is the largest single employer in Canby. The 200,000 square foot
facility sits on a 20-acre light industrial site in northwest Canby.
Pioneer Pump,
Inc. is a leading edge company specializing in the design, manufacturing
and sale of end suction centrifugal pumps for vacuum assisted, well
pointing, Industrial, Agricultural, Hydraulic Submersible and hydraulic
Power units. This International Company has over 30 employees and chose
Canby because of its location and growth opportunities. Pioneer Pump
built a new facility in the Canby Pioneer Industrial Park in 2007.
Mann’s Mfg. Inc
has been in Canby over 15 years. They produce a full line of bars,
beverage carts and new to their line, Architectural Medicine Cabinets.
Their products are found in the finest homes, hotels, restaurants,
casinos and private clubs.
Other Canby
manufacturers produce: custom injection molded plastic parts;
instruments for the trucking industry; fasteners for packages;
custom-made seats for heavy equipment; sand and gravel; reflective beads
for highway markings; paving materials; burlap bags; and craft books and
scrapbook supplies. |

Business & Retail District |
| Canby's business district includes the original downtown core and
areas along Highway 99E. A broad spectrum of products and services are
available for both residents and visitors to Canby, meeting most of
their shopping and business needs. Canby is home to 3 major
supermarkets, 6 banks, a bi-weekly newspaper, 4 pharmacies, a major car
dealership, 2 local gyms and merchants offering building materials,
clothing, gourmet coffee, landscape supplies, electronic equipment.
appliances, quilting supplies, home furnishings and decor and health
foods.
In 2000 a 165,000 square foot Fred Meyer store was developed in the
southeast area of town. In 2002 Pan Pacific Properties began a major
redevelopment of a large retail complex in the southwest area along Hwy
99E. |

Comprehensive Plan looks down the road 20 years and has earmarked large
portions of land for industrial use. Within the city limits, 154 acres
has been designated for light industrial use and 25 acres for heavy
industrial use. Within the urban growth boundary, another 240 acres is
designated for light industry and 70 acres for heavy industry. Total
figures are 394 acres for light industrial use and 94 for heavy
industrial. |

serving the Canby area since 1904. Canby Telcom provides home and
business telephones, broadband technology, Internet access, calling
features, long distance and voice mail. |

Utilities |
| Canby Utility is a municipally owned utility
dedicated to providing Canby residents and businesses with
exceptional service, a reliable supply of electricity and clean, safe
drinking water. The utility also handles the billing for the City
of Canby sewer service. Canby Utility is governed by a five-member
board appointed by the Mayor. The utility is funded solely through
its operations and is not subsidized by property taxes or general tax
funds from the city. NW Natural Gas provides natural gas to
residential and commercial properties in the Canby area. |
